How to grow cabbage

Growing cabbage from seed is best started from indoors for the first 5 weeks. The ideal temperature for growing cabbages is between 15 to 20°C. The variety of cabbage you choose to grow will influence when you should plant so make sure you consult either the seed packet or where you buy the seeds from. Initially place the seeds in a shallow tray containing a moist peat based soil. Cover the seeds with about 0.5in of soil. Place the tray somewhere warm and light.

While the seeds are germinating choose a place to plant the crop in an area that has a ph6 level and a good amount of sunlight. The soil should be of a loose consistency and high in organic matter. Dig the patch over removing any weeds and apply a layer of manure, making sure to dig the manure in well. Growing cabbages flourish in soil that has high levels of potassium and nitrogen both of which can be found in manure.

When the young cabbage plants are ready to be planted outside, place each plant approximately 20 inches apart in rows that are 25in apart. Make sure the root ball is at least covered by an inch of soil. While the cabbages are growing water accordingly in the evenings.

The crop should be ready for harvesting in roughly 90 days from seed germination depending on the variety of growing cabbage. The ideal time to harvest the crop would be just before the heads crack. The heads should be firm to the touch.
