How to grow celery

Growing celery is dependent on the variety chosen and on your local climate. The soil should be high in organic matter and be well drained. The PH level of the soil should be around 7. Begin by germinating the seeds indoors in a light peat. This process should begin in late march (UK). Keep the seedlings well watered.

The seedlings will be ready for transplanting outside when they are roughly 2 - 3 inches (5 - 8 cm) high. One week before transplanting the seedlings, dig the patch over and apply a layer of manure, ensuring the growing celery has a good source of nutrients. The seedlings should be planted approximately 1 foot (36 cm) apart in rows which are 3 feet (108 cm) apart.

The celery should be ready for harvest in approximately 4-5 months from planting. However in order to give the stalks a good taste and a white complexion, cover the stalks 1 month before harvesting.
