How to grow leeks

Growing leeks should begin in the spring time after the last chance of frost when the soil is easy to work. The ideal soil is high in organic matter and have a ph of around 7. Initially begin by working over the soil applying manure and removing weeds. Create trenches for the seeds to grow in. The trenches should be spaced 18 inches (45cm) apart. The seeds should be planted 1 inch deep and separated by 4 - 5 inches.

When the seedlings have surfaced at fortnightly intervals mound soil up around the shoot to the bottom of the first set of leaves. Repeat this process throughout the growing leeks life. This process stops the sun from getting at the stalk which keeps the stalk white and it also gives the plant support. Keep the patch devoid of weeds and give the growing leeks a watering every night.

The leeks should be ready for harvest when the stem is approximately 1 inch (3cm) in diameter. From sowing the seeds the growing leeks should be ready for harvesting in 4 months time.
